lolochickop3 pittsburgh loves bikes

been a lot of talk of the ‘burgh around here recently, and that pleases me just fine, having lived there the first 18 years of my life, and (unfortunately) having seen the devastation that the outsourcing of the steel industry brought. this was the cause of massive unemployment, rampant depression and violence, a major exodus, and all along, the 200-year-old coal and steel pollutants in the air weren’t helping anything. since that time, pittsburgh has had a MAJOR rebound — they have some of the most progressive cancer research in the nation, their children’s hospital is second-to-none, they have embraced greening, and they’ve bounced back to become a world-class city.

but that’s neither here nor there. (i suppose technically, it’s "there.") the point is that i’ve recently discovered just what a love the ole ‘burgh has for our r3-beloved two-wheeled transit, the bicycle.

first, i "discovered" an online publication called URBANVELO. they’re a good, solid bike blog, pittsburgh-based, with reliable reviews, killer tech articles, some good pictures, events, and lots of links to pittsburgh-specific bike shit like BIKE PGH and otherwise.

then, within urbanvelo, today, i spied their post on the BIKE-IN MOVIE NIGHT, which is essentially a bicycle film festival.

i guess i’m just finally realizing what a great cycling sub-culture pgh has. i mean, as a kid, as a BMXer, sure, i knew there were good riding spots everywhere. but this is different. this is advocacy and support, not just a good set of doubles in the plentiful woods.

all these things aren’t anything super new or outstanding in any ways, really, and in fact you’d expect them from a hippie-dippie city like san francisco or seattle. but an old-school blue collar coal mining town? not so much. which is why i’m proud to say that pittsburgh is rockin my world right now.

acd6a702bca32a77f4258dc7b32408b8 Lope Endorsed Post Ride beverages

What happens when they don’t have enough damn margarita mix for post-ride margaritas at your local mexican place? Yes, you insist they put the agave wine in FRESCAS. And it could only have been better had they actually had the MELON fresca they claim to, not just the Strawberry. But still. And yes, there were two of us. They ran out of margarita in the first one, I said top it off, we’ll take it. For brand awareness.

postpumpkv0 lungWish #111 dahon postpump

SIIICK!!!

i’m all for integrated watchamacallits on piecesParts, ESPECIALLY when it comes to my rides. the more stuff attached to/built in to the bike, the less shit you have to carry on your person. also, harder to steal. and i have a bit of integration working on my new fixie project, in the form of an integrated rear red blinkie light in the seatpost. (which may or may not prove to work out — more on that in other topics.)

but THIS is the ill shit. a full-length floorpump IN THE SEATPOST. if you look up "concealed dope" in the dictionary, this is definition III. (def. I is a S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform, and def. II is an SG.)

the little flippy bit at the bottom is a footbrace, and when folded up, it covers the hose access. so you take the seatpost off your bike, flip the footbrace out, withdraw the hose from within (that’s what she said), attach it to your valve, stand on the foot thing, and USE YOUR SEAT AS THE HANDLE. goes up over 110psi "easily," according to the specs.

my sole concern is the length. obviously, you can’t chop any length off of it without compromising it. and the post is actually made for a folding bike, so it’s looong. so you’d have to take some serious cacalayshuns to make sure it worked. but if it did? holy SHIT.

this, discovered, of course, right after i made the switch to CO2 cannisters. hahaha!!!

If You Feel Like Getting Into it with Cyclists...

This is another harrowing tale of a road-raged driver pissed about being behind cyclists, who sped up, passed them, then slammed on the brakes, and almost killed them. It’s gruesome. What’s worse? The driver was an emergency room doctor.

This has happened to me, or the threat of same rather, and I can’t stress enough, man, actions have consequence…

86aa1e3f01cad4afee48f0bee0ce6cdc The Pederson Bike

‘the most comfortable bike in the world’

Built in 1920′s, re-fabricated in the 90′s in Denmark. At first I was appalled, but now I’m curious.

So awesome. It’s based on a cantilever concept. You can read about it on their site.
They even do a ‘Model-T’ program, where they let you have one for two weeks risk free. Not bad.

26c3356c743af33691c31e5d8c420177 Regenerative Bike

Why am I posting about an electric bike?
Regenerative braking. Something they only managed to do in Europe, in the elevator industry, so far, but is such common sense it hurts. You expend energy stopping. Heat byproduct. Capture, return to energy source.

Now, this is my second favorite regenerative energy bike. My first being my fixed gear. Not regenerative braking, but the drive train uses friction to power itself, to some degree, in the form of no freewheel.

Anyway, this is at LEAST a step in the right direction for those not pedaling but preferring not to be in a car…
