Put a fork in it
10/23/08
I came into a(nother) Schwinn le Tour frame on the cheap, but with no fork….I see "26" forks" on ebay and such, but what should I be looking for, and what is compatible with this frame?

Bike Bio: Old_Bluey(tm)
10/15/08
OK, so I am ready to move on to bike #2…. nickname "Old_Bluey(tm)" (from a Simpsons episode where Bart lovingly refers to his favorite crowbar as "old Bluey"…
Interestingly enough, the hipster crowd in my neighborhood has realized that I actually built a bike, and a certain dude want me to build him one. Sounds like a commission, which is music to my wife’s ears as she is slowly getting outnumbered by the bikes in our house. I figure I can build this one for under $400, and sell it to Mr Sideburns/distressed Atari T-shirt dude for like $550.
Can I get a sticky post and start this up? I have like 75% of the pieces already, spillage from my last build, and am lining up a powder coater. I think my busy hands have found their calling.

NYT Field Guide for Cyclist Fashion
10/10/08
This was blogged about by BSNYC quite awhile ago and I loved the snark therein.
But in looking for last minute fashion tips for JoBlue, I found something even more important than looking like one of these cyclists photographed…

Joe, just look FOR this one, and ride behind her. Her radiance will bleed back onto you, and you might have a warm undercarriage.
Good luck in your search!

Electronic Surveillance is my Friend
10/09/08

On my last two rides, I had drivers nearly run me down. Not just the usual not-seeing-me or spontaneous swerving or what have you, but deliberate action. One SUV surged forward and swung in front of me to cut me off as they passed me on the left, as if to make some point that i shouldn’t be inconveniencing him in the right side of the lane… the other, a MUNI bus, the driver looked right at me, then rolled forward and pushed their way into the intersection and turn and I had to back out of the way. And a few weeks back, a Marin bus took a left too narrowly and almost took out wifebot(tm) right in front of me. Inches from her as I pulled on her. Things are getting ugly on the roads for drivers, and the stress of recent days only makes it worse.
I was thinking, last night on the GGB on my return commute, if it were feasible to run video recording for my entire commute. It would be fun to post a slice of life route of my commute on flickr, but also, it would be a nice insurance policy. I wondered if my camera, assuming I could mount it that securely, would run out of power or memory on a one hour ride… I’m still going to do some tests.
But I rediscovered the Action Camera from Oregon Scientific, after seeing it’s use from a Chicagoan CM rider who posts vids of car attacks on her site. The rez is a bit low, but it might be a good alternative, certainly aerodynamic and well mounted…

Plus, on their own site, just for lung, a GROUSE attack!

(to be fair, that was more like grouse self-defense, to me…)

belt-drive TREK XO2 makes me nervous
10/09/08
don’t get me wrong — i think a belt-drive bike is fucking AWESOME-looking, and would not only be SILENT, but likely lighter, too. (debatable, because of thicker chainwheel and cog, but still, it could happen.) it may also have easier maintenance (again, debatable, but maybe), and it definitely looks fucking COOL.
but i’m wondering what’s maybe the obvious — is it STRONG enough? if i’m riding a belt-driven fixie and i torque backwards to affect subtle speed changes, is my drivetrain going to skip? do i have new concerns now, specifically regarding the lifespan of the belt? is a carbon/teflon/adamantium belt actually more expensive than a chain? HOW THE FUCK DO I CHANGE IT? it’s not like it has a master link or something. i mean, on a frame that’s MADE for a belt, such as the above, you can see they’ve heavily modded the drops to actually create a gap through which you can mount the belt, but on conversions or otherwise, you’d have to have at least one of your drops converted, or be handy with a welder.
i’ve got mixed emotions. on the one hand, i love it. on the other, i fear it. and the american way to react to fear is to hate it. HERE’S the link — you can decide for yourself.
