i use barEnd lights on my road drops, which pretty much fucking rule. (except changing the batteries is a nightmare.) because road drops face backwards at their ends, it only makes sense that you could put a red blinky there and have another means of being seen without cluttering your bike all up with bolt-on shit. but riser bars, to my knowledge, have never had this option. sure, i suppose if the diameter were right (which it’s usually not), you could jam some road drop blinkies in there, but they’d in essence be facing OUT, not BACK. sub-par.

enter the ALUX XRL BAR END LIGHTS. specifically created for riser bars, these barEnd lights have their LEDs facing back, even though the barEnd itself is facing out. the bike i just built up for (SG)f has riser bars on it (for now — she’s considering bullhorns), and i have a set of risers i throw on loos3y occasionally for illery of the lung degree. i think that warrants picking up a couple sets of these guys. i hate the color, but as a rule, function must outweigh form.

My next project is probably going to be an early 1970′s schwinn collegiate.

http://picasaweb.google.com/nocella.joe/718C00xCollegiate?authkey=6Hwmg9Rjzm8#

My question is this. It was probably set up to have 26 wheels (haven’t really measured it, as it is still at work in the bike room)…what is the modern equilivant in wheel sizes?

I also need a BB adapter (ashtubla to English, am I correct?)…any insights?

i was reading this book i got at a trunk show the other day — "critical mass – bicycling’s defiant celebration" — and therein, in one of the pictures, i spotted a crazy little contraption on some dude’s handlebars. it was a triangular bracket holding a mini maglite. i quickly jumped online and googled "mini maglite bicycle handlebar mount." first hit — DKG’S MINI MOUNT.

pretty simple, you put it on your handlebars and insert a mini maglite. boom. headlilght. i’m all over this, and will be ordering two this week. they come in black or silver, and DKG also makes a version for the full-sized maglites.

i love this product more for functionality’s sake than any other. it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing device, you must admit. but i have big issues with headlights. they don’t really work all that well unless you get the ones that have a fucking battery pack attached to them, and i will NOT go there. but this here, it allows you to mount a light that will actually work, as well as giving you the ease of just taking it off when you’re done. and that’s definitely something i can get behind.

approved!

tltcgen new tech tip new tech tip

so i was watching a cool video of a bike build at 10x speed (HERE), and was struck by a great tech tip therein.

often, one ends up with little holes in their frame that they don’t use. joblue ran into this on his first build, when he was wanting to fill the small holes left by his headbadge removal. in the video, it’s the filed-down water bottle cage mounting holes. at the time when joblue wondered how to fix it, we all settled on using bondo or something of the like. in the video, though?

SOLDER.

i don’t know why that didn’t dawn on me straight away, i mean it only makes sense. i’m going to try it eventually, and what i’m most anxious to see is if the solder actually holds as the frame is battered and stressed.

but the bottom line is to fill the holes with a good amount of solder, file it down smooth, and paint! brilliant!

apologies for the crappy picture — cameraphone + photoshop levels adjustment.

last night, walking down mission street home from BART (it’s been rainy, so i haven’t been riding), i came by the above, which has completely thrown my brain into a tailspin.

that is exactly what you think it is. a bicycle with a motor attached.

on the one hand, i’m not one for adding an exhaust-producing power source to a non-exhaust-producing vehicle, so of course my initial reaction was "HEATHEN!"

not to mention, what’s that, like a 3hp engine? this thing’s top speed can NOT be over 13mph. i can beat that on a CLIMB. most daily riders could smoke this fucking thing and not even blink an eye.

but yet, on the other hand — i’m so fucking intrigued by the ingeneuity that i can’t help but want to MAKE one!!! i mean, check that shit out, man, it’s got some kind of weedWhacker engine on it, an extra chain and some guide cogs turning what has to be a custom cog on the typically non-drive side, all of it attached to a moped’s gas tank, mounted on the top tube, and run by a throttle at the grip. that’s fucking SWEET. i couldn’t really tell what the hell was going on with the human-powered side — the chain is slack, and while the front derailleur appears to have been removed, it looks like that back one is still working. also, it still has a shift lever and cabling and all that running to the rear derailleur. but with that chain running so loose, i have to imagine that the human-powered side is non-functional (which is another thing that bothers me — it should have the option). and there’s no way that the shifting could possibly affect the engine side. for one thing, that’s not a multi-speed engine, and for another, the gears and derailleur would have to be on the other side of the bike to be associated with the engine. also, no clutch.

anyway, my brain is hurting from all the back-and-forth "love it! hate it!"s that i’ve been experiencing. i think i should just make one and then we’ll see what’s what.
