knog "boxer" rackless pannier
02/25/09
THIS is so rad to me. the knog "boxer" is a rackless pannier, and the way that works is that it has a lightweight internal aluminum frame and three (that’s right) hidden clips that attach to your bike at the seatpost and the two wheelstays. that allows you to rock major cargo capacity on your bike WITHOUT HAVING TO INSTALL A LUGGAGE RACK.
now, i’m always batting around the idea of a cargo hauler bike (and may even be working on one currently, wink!) with a "permanently" attached luggage rack on both the front and back. but the attraction here to me is those days when you don’t necessarily need to "haul cargo," but you do have some extra bits to carry and manage and maintain. your inclination is likely going to be to want to ride your daily bike.
where, exactly the breaking point comes between just using a bigger backpack (i have two riding packs — one small and one large) and using this is still to be determined, though. would the weather dictate it? for instance, it’s hot as the face of the sun out and you don’t want to have to wear a backpack?
i dunno, but i think this thing is sick beyond compare. oh, and one final detail of importance? it has hidden backpack straps. so when you arrive at your destination, you just pop it off, leaving a clean bike, throw the pannier on your back, and do your thing.
all the deets…
+ converts from rackless pannier to backpack with hideable straps
+ padded 15.5" laptop sleeve
+ multiple internal organizer pockets
+ center top padded handle for carrying
+ lightweight internal aluminum frame, three small composite frame clips for attachment to almost any bike. clips attach to each seatstay plus seatpost or seattube.
+ water resistant 1200D fabric with taped and sealed seams outside
+ waterproof tarp on the wheelside
+ water sealed zippers and heavy duty hardware
+ dimensions: 370mm x 510mm x 150mm

Valencia Lights Retimed for Bikes
02/24/09

As a pilot program, they re-timed the lights between 16th and 21st to be on a 15mph all-green config. Lung, try this out one time and see if you notice the difference? I think it sounds awesome. Part of the pilot is to see what drivers do now that it’s not timed to 25mph as it normally is.

helmet mod activateds
02/23/09
tonight i may have lost WR as a friend, as i structurally modified my helmet with a drill in order to rock these two heavy metal devil horns. but you take your chances in life, and it’s one i was willing to take.
why?
because when you add it to my recent LOOS3Y(TM) MOD, it makes three spikes.
yeah, thatsRight.

ok, so despite the fact that i turned up a MASH SF road jersey on THEIR SITE a couple weeks back, i totally missed that favorite local fixed crew MASH was participating in the tour of california. ON TRACK BIKES.
prior to the race, MASH OG garrett chow was quoted on FUCK GAS as saying, "We’ll be using the same bikes we ride every day. We ride them to get a burrito. We all cycle passionately when we can. It’s kind of like, ‘Why do people climb Everest? Because they can.’ We’re giving it 100 percent and seeing what we can do."
and when road vet christian vande velde of team garmin-chipotle gave them some grief about their equipment needs with, “I break my best stuff and they give me a new one right away. You guys are screwed!”, chow just breezed, “We’ve got two spare tires and two spare chains. That ought to get us through the nine stages.”
anyway, they did it — 750 miles on fixies. i’m so fucking stoked and impressed and inspired. followed by ENRAGED, when i learned that on day 8, a fucking security guard at the finish line CHECKED garrett off his bike. sound FAMILIAR?
but anyway, big ups to MASH SF — i fucking love you guys. sf, represent!

our very own joblue was noted in today’s BSNYC as the proprietor of "the latest in what feels like an endless procession of fixed-gear meth labs." (scan the article till you get to the above picture.)

Today one Lung and i did one of our semi-regular Saturday morning fixie crawls around town, which we try and do when it’s not raining and there’s no long road ride planned that weekend. We generally do the same thing: get breakfast, noodle around, go to bike shops to pick up small gifts, and ride bikes around our beautiful city.
This time was triple-nice because Lung brought along Grrl(f) cousin Rambo on his first fixed gear. Rambo bought this bike previously converted, and Lung and he broke it down, tuned it up, replaced some stuff, and made it road-worthy. Rambo’s love affair with fixed gear bikes is just beginning, and he’s eyeing pieces parts in the LBS and scheming. But in like 72 hours, he already skid stops like a MASH guy. It’s amazing. He’s great!
We met down by the docks, (dodgy fucks in the duck!) and rode along the water to the Marina to Home Plate for breakfast. Then we bombed through the Presidio and up a route to the top of the grade that WASNT the nice curving one which is hard enough, but a straight shot runners path. Lung made it all the way up, but Rambo and I had to walk it towards the top, to be honest. Then we shot over to American(s) in the Haight for small gifts, before jetting back to the Mission, where we went to Freewheel and then parted ways. Here’s a map Lung put together:

A great day for riding; sunny, warm and extra sweet for the new Team Lope ridership AND the impending storm on the horizon. Excellent!

i wish i could find better pictures of this, but i scoured all the links at the REPORTING SITE and got a whole lotta fuckAll.
anyway, high-end, UK-based cycling clothier RAPHA has teamed up with london tailor TIMOTHY EVEREST to produce the above — a 3-piece cycling suit.
so i GET it, and i actually love a lot of things about it, not the least of which being the collar, which has buttons underneath so you can raise and secure it to keep your neck warm…
but my question is … REALLY?
$3500, btw.

THIS concept seems like a fun execution, but i’m not the kinda guy who likes people to know where i’ve been riding, cause then they can follow me.
the idea is simple — a chalk-filled unit that latches onto your bicycle’s seat tube, continually depositing a fine dust of colored chalk onto your back wheel, which is then transferred to the street.
fun.
colorful.
not for me.
