i’ve only ridden clipless pedals on a proper road bike, but i’d been toying with the idea of doing it on loos3y(tm) since she was built, and i finally got myself some good road shoes the other day, making today’s rides to and from work (with a stop by the bike shop) my first time ever riding fixed and clipped.
the report is good, i have to say. my fear of tearing out of the cleats when i tried to skidStop was alleviated in like 30 seconds, and aided by tightening the springs in my pedals for good measure. i have a LOT more power in my pedalStrokes now, too, cause i’m pulling up on the back stroke, and that was apparent early in the day, too.
i’m still in the adjustment phase, both technically and from a muscle memory perspective. to the first point, technically, i’m still figuring out where the cleats should be positioned on the shoes. this am i had them as far back as they would go, to try and emulate where my feet are in sneaks and platform pedals. FAIL. at work, i shifted the cleats forward, and the ride home was more comfortable, but still not perfect. lots more adjustment coming there. as to the second point, the muscle memory — i’m not very good at hitting the right place on the pedal with my cleat when i roll out from a dead stop, so i either have to trackstand through the light cycle, or i have to look down on my first pedalStroke to make sure i hit it right. this will all come with time.
aesthetically, the shoes are pretty rad (to me), and they’re relatively comfortable for stiff-soled cycling shoes, so that’s a win, too.
i really like this new challenge and i’m already comfortable to mash pretty hard. i definitely feel more connected to my bike (hmmm, i wonder why?), and that feels great, too. and after the bike shop, where i was picking something up that’s big, i rode the rest of the way home one-handed and clipped, which was a strange and awesome challenge also bested.
overall, i’m extremely pleased. i don’t know that i’ll keep this style going, but for now it’s making me SUPER happy.

longest rollout EVER

holy SHIT. i’ve seen this karl poynter kid before on some of my BMX videos and he’s smooth as a pornStar’s moneyMaker, but THIS is bordering on unbelievable. that’s gotta be a hundred and fifty feet he slides that mother.
note that he’s not backpedaling. that’s because he’s running a "freecoaster," which is a FREEwheel that doesn’t backpedal, making it function like a COASTERbrake, but without the brake. it’s hard to explain generically, but suffice it to say he wouldn’t be pulling that wheel nearly as far without it.

Brooks saddles
03/23/09
I was thinking about getting a nice Brooks touring saddle for my recently acquired Canadian battlewagon….any advice on models and places to purchase?…also, and advice on racks? I was thinking this could be like a Belgian-low-country-baguette-tin-tin-esque inspired restoration. Since my acquisition costs were low, I was really looking to "do it up"
its funny, when you type in "brooks" and "saddles" in ebay or google, you get alot of Blazing Saddles references.
"(1)Under the provisions of this bill we would snatch 200,00 acres of Indian territory, which we have deemed unsafe for their use at this time. They’re such children."
"(2)200,000 acres? 200,000 acres? What will it cost, man? What will it cost?"
"(1)A box of these (box of paddle balls)."
"(2)Are you crazy? They’ll never go for it, and then again they might. Little red devils! They love toys!"

Battlewagon
03/22/09
A guy around the corner who sells old bikes sold me this classic Canadian CCM Encore for $70. Check out the "CCM" letters on the crank, the front fender detail and the kooky chainguard/down tube intersection. I may keep this as authentic as possible and make it a touring bike, with a great Brooks saddle and some classy panniers.

Found a powder coating place like 2 blocks from my house…you have to check out the "street view" from this Google map…typical Brooklyn warehouse, across from the cemetery…looks almost fake its so authentic…anyways, $150 to p-coat…$75/hr to s-blast.
