"missle" giove up on dope charges
06/19/09

missy "missle" giove, one of the winningest downhill MTB racers ever (male OR female), was ARRESTED on charges of intent to distribute over 400 lbs of pot.
first of all, AWESOME.
but seriously, trying to unload that kind of quantity is just foolish. that’s DEA-level quantity. the feds. bad fucking news. even on the STATE level, and even if she’d been in a state that tolerates that sort of thing (which she wasn’t), you’re going down.
i feel bad for her. even though first-timers get leaner penalties pretty much across the board, she’s still gonna do time.

Fixed-Gears are for Suckers
06/10/09

I sometimes collect judgmental comments about fixed-gears and their riders when I come across them on bike forums. As we continue to see, the bike community can be pretty cliquey… and the hipster fixie scene does breed contempt among many other riders. Still, these are awesome in their ignorance:
:::
"They’re a huge pain in the ass to ride, unless you live someplace thats completely flat."
"You’re in the wrong gear 100% of the time. If you want something cool to ride down to the bike fashionista cafe to pull alterna-messenger-devil-fixie-girls, then OK. They’re a fine fashion accessory, but I guarantee my 1981 GT 26" wheel BMX cruiser is cooler, and not every crusty messenger tard has one."
"Oh yeah, go to some city where the messengers ride ‘em and watch the poor f$@kers try to go around corners faster tha 10mph when the can’t coast. Ha! "

i remember the early days, before i got my driver’s license, when i had no choice but to get around by bike. after i got my license, i was so deeply ingrained in BMX culture that i CHOSE to do it — it was just more fun to me. cruising downtown pittsburgh was a nightmare of horns and hate, but i didn’t give a fuck. i remember later, in 91, when i moved to SF, hauling my BMX bike up these fucking hills, trying to avoid being crushed by buses and irate taxi drivers. i guess these were "the good ol’ days." hahaha, or something!
through all those years, the only other people i ever saw on bikes were other BMXers and messengers. maybe the occasional hippie. point being, if you’d asked me then if i thought there would be a day when there were more bikes crossing market and van ness at rush hour than there were cars, i’d have laughed out loud. we were the minority. there were no bike lanes. there were no bike racks. there were no laws protecting us. we took our chances every time we stepped on our pedals — there was a very good chance that we were going to DIE every time we left the house. (still is, i suppose, but not like then.)
but now, in the era of oil wars and global warming, it’s SO different out there that companies even outside the cycling world are starting to get onboard. and proving yet again that they’re at least AWARE of the pulse, nike is at the front of the pack with their CTRS concept STORE. (additional, wordless report HERE.
greeting you with the admittedly haughty door pressing…
"we are the CTRS. we are united in cycling and our passion for everything on two wheels. we are constantly on the hunt for the next taste of freedom. we use our bikes for more than just exercise. it is our transportation, our means of living, our way of life. we are artists, messengers, mechanics, writers, and photographers. we promote urban cycling in cities around the world, inspiring the next generation to follow in our footsteps."
…the CTRS store seems to be yet another, even bigger part of the corporate world’s acknowledgment of the cycling movement. i mean, say what you will about them just trying to get a buck off of the williamsburg hipsters (or mission hipsters, or south side hipsters, or…), the fact is that they’ve constructed the first place outside of a bike shop that cyclists (specifically urban cyclists) can feel is their own. it’s almost as if we BELONG now. which is SO fucking wierd.
i’m on board. this concept store is in LA, and within, probably only has the NIKE AIR ZOOM TIEMPO CITY SERIES (on sale) and the bikes that the collaborating riders picked to rep their cities (on display), but whatever. if it takes off, one will pop up in SF soon enough and i will, for maybe the second time in my life, give nike some of my money.

nike’s been on the armstrong tip for a while, so they’re no stranger to cycling. and adidas has been making cycling shoes since 1971, before nike even existed. and while every hipster from the mission to williamsburg rocks SB dunks or stan smiths, neither company has specifically designed an urban cycling shoe. till now.

we’ll start with the NIKE AIR ZOOM TIEMPO. this is one of the nike x LIVESTRONG products, meaning that all, or at least a portion, of the purchase price goes to the LIVESTRONG foundation instead of the sweatshop children who make the shoes. the AZT is currently dropping in 4 colorways, each specific to a city. the ones that i’m sure are WRs fave up there — the red and yellows — those are the tokyo shoes. gray is NYC (my current fave), the black ones with the purple inside (unseen is some yellow at the heel on the outside) is LA, and the green swoosh one in front is london. future city versions include SF, paris, berlin, and … austin, tx. nike worked together with a famous cyclist from each city to come up with the designs (i’ll just go ahead and let you take a guess at who the famous cyclist from austin is that they worked with on that city’s version), and in the case of the yet-to-be-released SF version, the cyclist was massan from the MASH SF crew. proper. i hope they’re white and orange. i will rock the FUCK out of them. each city’s version is only available in that city. so like you couldn’t get the SF ones if you lived in berlin. well, ebay, of course, but you see my point.
according to PROLLY’S PRELIMINARY REVIEW of the AZT, they have a deep heel which reduces rubbing and holds your heel solidy in place, and they have a stiff, almost chipboard-like sole which one assumes is an emulation of a proper cycling clipless shoe, where the sole is completely inflexible.
so that’s nike.

then we move on to the adidas x zeitfrei COMPLETE RIDE entry. the pictured version is the ultra-limited (10 pairs, to be exact) bianchi version, which, as you can see, emulates bianchi’s identity colors. there’s also a 100-run version that’s a hypebeast x solebox collaboration (that’s at the posted link), and then one assumes the general population will just get a generic colorway.
personally, i LOVE the look of this shoe. the gray is wicked, and the stripes, as recessed and perforated, are COMPLETELY rocking my world.
technically, these shoes also have a stiff sole, but unlike the nikes, they have reflective accents (including under those perforated stripes … sick), some venting, a tongue pocket for the laces (fucking AWESOME detail) and a sole pattern that increases traction at the pedal contact point. the technical details are where adidas’ experience (and quite frankly, superiority) over nike really becomes apparent. they’re just better shoes for the task at hand.
anyway … APPROVED, ALL!

Cups (and cakes)

I have observed ball bearing retainers facing in both directions during my various headset autopsies…my understanding (verified by the TL Senior mech) is that the open end of the retainer faces to3wards the sloped surface of the race(s), and away from the frame cups….why do I see the inverse sometimes?

Wish you had a laid-back lowrider bicycle bicycle AND a road bike, all n one? This prototype makes it happen. Or, you know you could do like Lung and just reconfigure your bike as you go with a sack full of small gifts… that sounded dodge…
