This, from a series of Edwardian era speculative engineering illustrations, shows something even cooler than the pontoon-based water bikes I’ve seen around in Mexico and elsewhere that I loved so… it’s a water Unicycle, both defying gravity AND seemingly working on the principle of a watermill…
Excellent.
And old timey good!

Indoor Bike Storage as Decor
07/28/09

This article from Apartment Therapy briefly touches on the use of bikes hung indoors as decor, rather than as a blemish to be hidden from view as they are typically found. I’m a big fan of this, particularly if you’ve put some work into a nice, custom build, keep it clean, and hang it as a display item when not in use. Vy nott? I love it. And for the everyday commuter bike, rather than hide it in the corner, express the functional utility of a wall or ceiling hung system and your priorities in general, and let it be an exposed part of your home’s decor. Nothing to be ashamed of there.

The hanging mechanism shown here is new to me: the Cyclops. It can be found here.

The Shocker
07/23/09

I’m not super into the color or the smooth, rounded edges of the frame… but the overall massing, the length of that chain, everything about it. BOSS!

WOW. just … wow. dude took a vintage break-apart bike and restructured it with a giant custom basket in the middle, which holds a big tupperware tub. now that would be cool enough on it’s own, but dude also re-fitted the thing so that you can drop two little caster wheels, break away the front end from handlebars to front wheel, and bring it into the store, leaving just the back end locked up outside. load, buy, re-attach, and ride home.
oh, and did i also mention that with about 5 minutes of wrenching (take off grocery-getter handlebars and attach apehangers to front end), you can re-attach as originally intended and have no more grocery cart stretch middle?
you MUST look at the build photos (above link). your mind will be blown.
from this…

to this…

to this…

with quick wrenchwork taking you "back" to this, which is still an upgrade from the original…

oh, and did i mention that it’s FIXED!?

uncalled-for retaliatory aggression
07/21/09

THIS is a little tough to watch, but not entirely graphic, so just eye it at your own risk. it’s a bystander film of a confrontation between a cyclist and a pedestrian. the cyclist is a young, in-shape dude. the pedestrian is a middle- to later-aged asian man, unarmed. the older man confronts the cyclist about something (lots of the posts about this state that the cyclist had run a red light and hit the old man and they were arguing about who was in the right), the cyclist tries to leave, the old man keeps following him, and before you know it, they’re fighting. and then the cyclist clocks the old man in the head 4 times with a u-lock, till the old man is staggering and bleeding profusely out of the head.
this is UNCONSCIONABLE. unacceptable, unforgivable, and untenable. who the FUCK does this privileged motherfucker think he is? what gives him the right to go up against this old man’s head with a 2-pound chunk of steel? this man is arguing with him, sure, and maybe the old man even laid hands on him. i’m not saying that the fight was unforgivable — frankly, i don’t know what happened. but for christ’s sake, if you’re gonna hit the dude, do you REALLY need to do it with a block of steel? slap him, push him, punch him, kick him, do what you need to do man, but a u-lock to the HEAD? ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY?
this is really irking me BAD. this kid deserves to get hit by a truck. fuck him and everything he stands for. little bitch probably beats his dog, too.
yuck.

DUDE.
my birthday’s this friday, but this very morning, over eggs, bacon, and coffee with one very wrong robot, i was given an early present — pedalmafia’s pedal ID 1/9 scale "build up kit." in other words, a little bike…

now, it’s actually not as little as one might think. each of the wheels is about 2.75" in diameter, and the thing stands about 4.5" tall from desk to top of the seat. so it’s actually kinda big.
this is a pretty rare toy in the US, because it’s made and sold in japan, but there is one retailer in milwaukee who sells it, and i thank the big bossman for tracking THAT shit down.
the bike works like fingerBoards and fingerBikes, which is to say it comes with a small wrench that allows you to take it mostly apart…

and there’s accessory kits sold which allow you to swap parts out, too. note the bonus gift i got, which was the handlebar accessory kit…

you can get new frames, new chains, new seats, forks, wheels, bars, stems, whatever you like. and the level of detail is ASTOUNDING. you can even swap the fucking CHAINWHEEL. it’s got PEDAL CLIPS. the chain drives the wheel either way (fixed, bitch!), the seat is adjustable, the tyres come off the rims — it’s INSANE.
anyway, it’s proudly on my desk at work for today at least, but this is WAY too fucking cool to leave here — it’s gonna have to make it back to the house before long…

WR FTW!!!
