So I came across a Locked Cog post showcasing some Flickr shots of Devon, a woman with skillz both mad and displayable. I was alarmed to read the snarky, belligerent comments by blog guests about her weight (false, also not important) and her attractiveness (I think so) and virtually nothing about her skills. Further, she replied and lambasted one or two of those clowns in an insightful and clever way. It’s an interesting conundrum. She’s being posted to that blog, and others, and THIS one, because she’s some combination of an aesthetically pleasing woman, with a bike, doing tricks, or all of the above. The comments were sexist and lame. But at the same time, she posted shots of herself riding around. She’s an attractive girl. She probably gets jackass comments in real life too. Thats the unfair reality of our society. What disturbed me was that these dopes commented (incorrectly) about her appearance, but missed the REAL hot work at work here: that she is a bad ass rider, a confident, awesome-looking individual and seems to be a person who loves bikes and loves to ride. I don’t know about you, but I’m most delighted by bike grrls that look like they want to ride their bikes and have fun doing so. That’s mostly what MAKES them a Team Lope Bike Grrl in my book.
