This week will be the trial run of the Villain into Marin. And by run, i mean probably walking it back up the hills. But we’ll see!

So, after a few rides, I’m now in the refinement stage.

1. Seat: This was always going to be a long stretch before the, er, stretch, would allow for comfort. That’s just how it is with Brooks leather. But the saddle has been double-oiled and is now just slowly conforming… see me in another 160 miles or so.

2. Stem: The current Thomson X2 is a 130mm stem, which is ideal for short frames or long riders, neither of which is applicable here. I scored a 110mm version last week, and will swap it out and see how that feels. You can certainly go shorter, but not with Thomson. But I think this will be a nice adjustment to ease that reach discomfort (back pain after a few hours of ridine, between the shoulder blades)… if I need something even shorter, then I have to move on to the 3T.

3. Stokers: The one thing that was clear to me in the first few minutes of riding? I missed my hoods. After years of riding drops with hoods, it’s where I want my hands. Leverage for climbing, comfort on flats. But since I don’t use hooded brake levers, what to do?

Stoker levers, that’s what! These go on the rear bars of a tandem, to give that rider something to hold, but don’t have brakes in them. They are 33 kinds of radical.

Yay! On the bike in the next 24!
