Bike Build Process Log: Ghostal Beautification Program

The Ghostal build was nearly perfect, in my opinion. Great mix of ghosty cues and life-loving details like a break-I-mean-brake (and a cool lever!) and a lantern of life, etc. But one thing it did NOT have? A none more white frame. I did not want vendor graphics. I had no choice. The Origin8 Del Pasado I bought from our friends at City Grounds comes with the decals UNDER the clear coat. Don’t want decals? Sandblast and repaint. This actually makes sense. At such a low pricepoint for a pretty cool, if notLight, which is the opposite of light, they SHOULD have some degree of assurance that they can at least get their brand out there. Anyway, that was the remaining detail to tackle.

I had a concept: skullery! It plays into the ghosty concept, because it’s, you know, skulls. But also, when used as a pattern, layered and tiled, it becomes something else, beautiful in my opinion. I was not able to source a skull I liked in a decal that worked, so I contacted the guys at California Surf Stickers and they worked with me on a custom vinyl, printed in a thermal resin, and we printed a boatload of em. Huge thanks to that crew for the custom work and going the extra mile by bumping up the material quality. So now, I’ve spent the last several days applying them in layers.

ghosty!

Here’s a detail shot:

Note that because of the more robust vinyl, you can see the layering in terms of material thickness. Also, all white vinyl remains slightly translucent, so you can see the skulls fading in and out of each other, in a super cool ghosty manner.

I am very pleased!
