I’ve been meaning to put something up on these guys for weeks but things have been fast and furious getting ready for ALC, dorking around on the bike mechanics and life type business. Team Hype are guys out of LA, my old hood in South Bay in fact, active with LAFixed and increasingly representing the Cinelli MASH sweetness. I was stoked to see one out on the Day on the Ride, and we ended up riding with these guys for most of the day off and on. That’s the thing about doing events like this fixed: you’re at a different pace than the roadies (though overall we had some equilibrium, as we would climb faster than most of the roadies, who would then descend faster, etc… but fixed-gear riding doesn’t afford you the luxury of coasting or slowing when you’re tired, you have to keep mashing… so we actually saw the same roadies throughout the day, at all the rest stops.) Anyway, we’re looking forward to riding with the Team Hype guys on Aids Lifecycle in two weeks, and talking shop.

Items of interest:

- Here’s the guys and their rides:

Magnus Yang
Cinelli MASHSF frameset
Sugino drivetrain
46×17

Mike Tinio
Custom Mercier Kilo frameset
Campy drivetrain
48×17

Remi Farin
Cinelli MASHSF frameset
Dura Ace drivetrain
46/49×17

- You can read our reports on Day on the Ride and meeting Team Hype here and here, and see Remi’s post about same on their site here.

- Team Hype recently rode the Tour de Cure down south, a charity event for the ADA. This was cool to read about because the route bridges both areas I know familiar from high school (Palos Verdes climbs) and areas I see now as an adult (my parents moved to Lakewood, near Long Beach, so we pop down to LB a lot when we visit…) and like Remi says… that one climb is NOT for the babies. Read the report here.

- Here’s Magnus’ MASH built up. I loved this because it’s almost exactly what I was thinking about as the alternate design from what I ultimately chose to do with Crook (as Lung would say, murder it out.) Magnus used lots of chrome, plus white rims and tyres. Gorgeous. Only difference was my desire for bulls, which I ended up not doing because of my wanting a proper hood-position brake lever for the road. I love my bulls, and the BMX levers are great, but I erred on the safe side for ALC with proper drops. See the build here.

- Sadly, recently Remi went down on his MASH due to a tyre fail, and though he was scraped up, he walked away with a bent seatstay but otherwise OK. After a trip to the LBS (well, REI), he was back in action. Plus, he’s now running Conti Gatorskin Hardshells just like Crook. Sweet as!
