Recover Phone HALO?

Here’s an exciting follow-up to a discussion we had a few years ago. We were talking about all these possible ways to track a stolen bike. GPS transmitters at the time were bigger, short-lived and hard to interface with. AND expensive.

Phone Halo, designed primarily for lost key recovery, uses a GPS transponder that is the size of an eraser. It has a 7 day battery life. And it communicates with your iPhone/Touch giving you map location in realtime. And can tweet. And can FB. And it’s $60.

Now, feasibility is interesting. At that size, it could fit in several bike frame sections. To make it stay put beyond the initial likely strip-down post theft, you’d have to put it somewhere harder to find, like farther down your seat tube, rather than just tucked in easily. It would need to be removable on a weekly basis without excessive wear to the frame and components. And, really, it would essentially be a frame recovery tool because they’d strip the components off and sell or dump them immediately after theft.

But STILL.
