don’t steal air, bro

PROLLY brings us news of an INSTRUCTABLE which purports to show how to homegrow an air-stealing device. unfortunately, i contend that with a car sitting on 32psi and your bike likely sitting on 120psi, it’s going to be YOU who’s filling the CAR’S tyres.

detonated TREK

ZLOG comes at us with pics of a bike hit by an IED in baghdad.
i’m no fan of the destruction intended and caused by IEDs, but blowed up bikes are awesome.
and even more awesome is the CONVERSATION about how to chase the warranty. i especially love when it temporarily devolves into vocabulary school and then goes right to "idiocracy," before returning to the subject.

a few days ago, we HIGHLIGHTED a blog post from esurance, the car insurance company, entitled "whose road is it anyway? tips for drivers from a cyclist." it’s a very informative and unbiased article targeted at drivers in an effort to make car/bicycle interactions more smooth and less frustrating for everyone. the post has been picked up by other cycling blogs (you can follow the thread linked above), but more relevant to us on lope, PROLLY snapped it up this weekend.
telling you, prolly is a seriously good dude.
and it looks like esurance is a seriously good insurance company!

This is a heartwarming effort on the heels of a terrible tragedy. I hope to never experience his pain, but I love what he’s done with it.

Biking is a RIGHT
10/22/10

So no one commented on my Wrongrobot Comment banner from yesterday, which isn’t surprising in and of itself, but let me ‘splain:

This is a reference to a very basic, yet commonly misunderstood fact in this country: we are permitted, by the Constitution, to travel freely, using the conveyance appropriate for the period. That includes walking and biking.
It also includes cars and helicoptors and so on. They key here is that these items are regulated by permit. You MUST have a permit, in any state, to operate a motor vehicle. And as a result, driving is a privilege, not a right, while cycling is a right… outright.
Now, there’s lots of gray area here. Cyclists can be cited, as the vehicle code DOES require non-motorized bicycles in California to have reflectors, a bell, a headlight, and either turn signals or the rider’s use of hand signals. We can be cited for not having these. Also, in many states, the passing rule is that you must maintain the flow of traffic speed on public roads, and if more than say 5 cars are stacked up behind you, you are to pull over and let them pass, regardless of what vehicle you use. This is abused in anti-cycling jurisdictions as a means to keep cyclists off the roadway.
Bob Mionski has a great book called Biking and the Law, which i gave to Muadib as a gift last year. There’s a ton of interesting stuff in there.
But at the end of it all, the point is simply that when those yahoos yell at you to ‘get off the road’ etc etc, they have it backwards.
Read here for some history on how the courts have addressed the Constitution and it’s interpretation on this issue:
