I’ve had this on my calendar forever, and it’s only a few weeks away: a documentary on bike messengers. Sure, I want to see bikes and bikery, but also, I’ve always been fascinated by the messenger thing. From everyone I’ve talked to that WAS one, past-tense, it was brutal effort, hectic, not well compensated, and hard to get through without meth. It’ll be interesting to see hoe the case studies work out…

As is often the case, I liked this one for the hints of things more than the thing itself. I’m a sucker for very athletic, toned legs, and the hint of a tease in a skirt curl. And I love how tame this series was compared to some on Fyx’s site. Well done.

The Monkey Likes Shiny folks have been cooking up an insane downhill descender. You can see video of them blasting by at warp speed through the link. But what really delighted me was the absurdity of the cargo rack mod. I love it 10,000 times. Times three.

Her video for ‘Rollerblades’ inexplicably features her lazy-Saturday-Noodling around on a banna seat Scwhinn and occasionally flashing uncomfortable Urban Outfitters style poses. Rest assured, at the time of this writing, she’s 23, and she’s definitely going for that awkward yet sexy thing that Aubrey Plaza does, but look, points for the thingies on the spokes, I say.

Sure, kind of thrilling to watch, but man, I shudder to imagine the bloody mess when one of these frustrated freeway drivers tries to floor it to jump lanes as they always do, and sends PBRs in all directions like a scattermine.

Taken on Firday, in my wet and wooly ride into work, arriving just as it started to dump, so I was perfectly timed. Zip!

Yesterday was my birthday, and the weather forecast all week showed it as being the one day break in the storms we’ve been having. For the first time in years, I might have a dry bday (in at least one meaning of the term) so i was hot to get out for a modest ride in the morning. Of course, on the day of, there were dark clouds and cold whipping gusts, so it wasn’t so certain it was going to be as dry as was estimated, but hell with it, I was going. Team Lope’s Frenchie (Eric) and his brother-in-law-ish buf Donovan came in from the city on their Look road bikes, and I was on my Crook Type 3 (Cinelli X MASH) and we made for the loop, starting with the Strawberry extension to give it more teeth.

We got to the far third of the Tiburon half of the loop before sprinkles turned to light rain, but it was never pouring, soak-you-to-the-gills raining… just wet. It made for more careful descents and such, but it was well within the realm of rain riding that I consider enjoyable. You’re dressed in ride clothes, you have a jacket on, there’s reasonable weatherproofing on your layers for the phone, so eff it. And the ride, overall, was awesome. By the time we got through the Camino Alto section, dodging both wild turkeys AND deer in a matter of seconds apart, we landed in Mill Valley and the sun poked through again. The guys had some wind and such getting back up the grade, but I was stoked at my birthday ride. And frankly, riding with roadies means a lot of extra effort to keep the speed up on the fixed-gear, and I’m a little sore in the quads today. But wonderfully so.

He also represents about 90% of Lung’s lifestyle, but in this instance, I refer to his massive weight loss, which he attribues to riding. So, for perspective: he was on a hit sitcom for several seasons, made a ton of cash, and RIDES for transportation. And therefore, got fit.
