Lung has some reservations about this film, but I’m not worried about it. Freshly minted factory fixies show up in magazine spreads and on Old Navy commercials, with bits of packing foam stuck to them from their trans-continental journey from Taiwan, so if they want to to RUN or similar movie remade with bike couriers as the setting, go nuts. It’s not abusing a subculture. It’s just a setting, just like any other. On the plus side, it’s a few hours of watching bikes zipping around, doing tricks, etc etc vs watching 2 hours of many, many, many other things. Riders get to watch and spot the things which look stunted or edited, and messengers can laugh about how the dispatch office is portrayed, but look: it’s got Josep and he’s riding a nice beaten up fixie someone either built for them or they hired the right consultants to dial it in effectively. And look, if I were Josep, paid to RIDE a fixie around for several hours a day of shooting, boom, I’d do it. Plus, that girl from Heroes. Plus, he looks like me, if I lost 75 pounds and changed general ethnicities and didn’t look too close. By that, I mean I ride frequently enough in a maroon t-shirt, black shorts, hardshell helmet and pack that when I saw the thumbnail pass me on google I actually did a double take. As did several thousand others, no doubt. The only thing I’d cry foul about immediately is the idea that he’d do a triple rush or whatever they want to call it now, wearing a chainlock belt. That’s where a micro-U-lock makes a lot more sense.
