I’ve been so caught up in the life that I forgot to post about this when it was timely. Last month, two bands did a tour of the SF Bay Area entirely by bike: bikes with trailers, Xtracycles, cargo bikes… how awesome is that? Rupa and the April Fishes, and Shake Your Peace, were the bands. You can give them love on their FB page or through the band sites directly, and encourage more of the same.

Also, dope poster no?

prolly put up a beautiful SLIDESHOW of massan’s MUNI-themed LOW, which he shot at the red bull ride+style event this past weekend, where massan was racing in the track event.

WR and i have talked about this bike offline before and we both agree that the old-school MUNI colorway would be preferrable to the new-school MUNI colorway, but still — it’s a gorgeous bike, massan’s a 100% beast, and he’s repping his hometown with it (both in colorway and in that the manufacturer is local SF, making LOWs out of his garage), so i’m onboard either way.

you can also view some shots of massan racing it scattered throughout prolly’s SLIDESHOW of the event itself.

The Onion strikes again.
This above was my favorite. Kind of like when the Dude cries "nice marmot!’ when the nihilists drop a ferret up in his bath…
tune-up as a waste of money is funny. but a $25 tune-up neither exists, nor is expensive. Awesome…

I applaud Xtracycle as a company in general: a local business, delivering an amazing product (one of my favorite bike related products ever) with a lot of diversity. And I’m down with businesses selling accessories to supplement sales, even when superfluous or at markup. But still, a BLENDER for the deck for $225… vs. DIYing a blender kit at your local hardware store for a fraction. Or so it first appears…

Of course, that would also require you to be savvy enough to sort out how to rig the friction mechanism to make it work. I was thinking maybe you wire it to one of the friction rollers for a rim-run bike light. But not being electronics savvy either, not sure how that would work either, based on the voltage requirements of the blender on its low setting vs a bike light, and what that dynamo can handle. Presumably, that’s where the value is on the Xtracycle kit.

Frankly, you’d better be SUPER into serving margaritas at Mass…

This project appears to be a competition entry for a multi-use exhibition, museum and public space project near Shanghai, as developed by international firm JDS. The central conceit, if you can get past all the obvious symbolism of circular massing extrusions and all the round stamped punchouts in the second building, is the idea that these structures are designed to be accessible by bike, completely. Think Guggenheim NYC but with bikes being allowed on the helical ramp as opposed to being a daring method of getting arrested. It’s interesting, but anyone who has ridden over the Golden Gate Bridge during the shared bike/pedestrian hours, or during these months of construction where one side is closed, knows that bikes and pedestrians don’t mix well at any real density, and that assumes at least half of each demo is looking where they’re going, rather than at exhibits. Not that I wouldn’t ride up and down these structures if I were able, but I’d be worried about others. Still, overall, great to see a project that celebrates the bicycle as a means of transportation but also general access, as opposed to something marginalized as in the US, or merely a mundane transportation tool, as in China overall.
